The first official full length trailer for David Ayer‘s Suicide Squad has arrived!
The trailer debuted Tuesday night during a primetime special that aired on the CW Network, which serves as the home base for three DC Comics-based series.
The preview, which is expertly edited to Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody”, drops audiences into the world of characters such as Deadshot (Will Smith) and Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie) – villains who are roped into becoming a team of heroes by government operative Amanda Waller (Viola Davis).
Then, of course, there’s the most famous supervillain of all, the Clown Prince of Crime himself, the Joker (Jared Leto).
There is still much debate over how serious the film will take these characters. The use of Queen would suggest not so much, as well as giving it a very different air from the darker sizzle-reel footage that came out during San Diego Comic-Con last summer.
It’s also the exact opposite of the tone we got from Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, which takes place in this same world.
Only time will tell, but I think we can all agree that it does look like it could be a lot of fun.
In a bid to distinguish their offerings from Disney-owned Marvel Studios, Warner and DC are taking a grittier, edgier approach to its comic-book movie universe. Batman v Superman, due in theaters March 25, has its iconic heroes squaring off and indications of yet another apocalyptic battle following the one at the end of Man of Steel, and Suicide Squad, looks to make protagonists out of villains.
Another key to the studio’s strategy is the movie debut of Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot), who will show up in a big way in Batman v Superman, which sets the groundwork for her own standalone film in 2017. Production for the upcoming film is under way, which co-stars Chris Pine (Star Trek).
The special Tuesday night unveiled a first look at footage from the Wonder Woman standalone movie. Watch:
Suicide Squad hit theatres August 5th and stars Jared Leto, Will Smith, Margot Robbie, Jai Courtney, Joel Kinnaman, Viola Davis, Cara Delevingne and more.
