Supreme being and musical icon Prince has died. He was 57.

The artist was found unresponsive in an elevator at his Paisley Park Studios compound, which included his home, in Minneapolis, according to a Carver County Sheriff’s Office statement. Emergency workers tried to revive him but he was pronounced dead a short time later.

“It is with profound sadness that I am confirming that the legendary, iconic performer, Prince Rogers Nelson, has died,” his publicist said in a statement. “There are no further details as to the cause of death at this time.”

The singer was briefly hospitalised in Illinois last week for a flu emergency, according to TMZ, and cancelled two shows in Atlanta because of the illness.

Recent reports that Prince was treated for a drug overdose six days before his passing on the morning of April 21 have shed light on the singer’s cause of death, however nothing has been ruled conclusive.

The cause of death will no doubt be determined and reported on in the coming days, as will the outpouring of grief from around the world from family, friends, peers, and fans.

There really are no words to describe just how immense Prince’s influence has been on not just music, but fashion, culture, and art. His loss is incalculable. He will be missed and forever remembered as one of the most powerful and talented musicians in history.
