It feels like only yesterday Teen Wolf wrapped up the first half of Season 5 and now the universe is already gifting us with a dark and dangerous look at the first trailer for Season 5B, which will presumably pick up immediately where the finale left off.
The season ended on a bit of a dreary note with Scott (Tyler Posey) fighting Liam (Dylan Sprayberry) over Hayden’s (Victoria Moroles) fate, Scott and Stiles (Dylan O’Brien) growing more and more apart, Lydia (Holland Roden) and Sheriff Stilinski (Linden Ashby) struggling to stay alive, Parish (Ryan Kelley) becoming a hell hound and Theo (Cody Christian) bringing the chimeras, including Hayden, back to life. Not to mention, Kira (Arden Cho) being driven off the show for a number of episodes.
The trailer teases the fates of both Lydia and Sheriff Stilinski, the escalation of tension between Scott and Stiles and the possibility of a truce between Scott and Theo as they face a mutual opponent. “Your pack and mine, we’re going to be fighting for our lives,” Theo says. Is this just another attempt to manipulate Scott? Probably (dammit, Theo!)
It also teases a moment where Malia (Shelley Hennig) and Scott face a monster, who Malia believes will be the end of them both. However, Scott alludes to there being help on the way and with that Papa Argent (J.R. Bourne) returns in all his gun-toting glory.
And speaking of familiar faces, was that Deucalion?! Does this mean we’ll be seeing the return of Void-Stiles?
The show does have a tendency to over-crowd its narratives with villains, the first half of this season has already been pushing it with the Dread Doctors, the Desert Wolf and Theo and his pack agenda, so I’m hoping they don’t go overboard.
One of the most talked about cliffhangers involves the tension between Scott and Stiles, and with the season ending with the relationship of the group in such disarray, fans were left wondering what would become of their friendship.
Thankfully, in an August interview with The Hollywood Reporter, show creator Jeff Davis revealed details surrounding the reconciliation of Stiles and Scott. According to Davis, the two will eventually reunite but the journey to mending past grievances and conflicts is not going to be that simple.
“What’s next is partly a long road to recovery for Scott and Stiles’ friendship — it’s not going to be easy,” he said. “They’re not all going to come back together in episode 11. What we’re planning is a season of rebuilding. Our theme for season 5B is resurrection, so we’re going to be bringing the band back together, as they say, and it’s all going to be on Scott’s shoulders.”
There’s no other brotherly relationship I care about more, but I think it’s important to show this side of their friendship, for Scott to fully realise that he can’t trust and save everybody and that his decisions have consequences. We can only hope that it’s done well (it better be or I will hunt you down, Jeff Davis)
Teen Wolf‘s season 5B premieres January 5 2016.
